Get some METAL FOR THE BRAIN >;D
Note: When I talk about Metal, I mean good, old skool metal, NOT THIS NEW AGE SCREMO CRAP. So don't make any comments if they're simply prejudice accusations.
Also.. I'm not a satanist, but I tend to act like one. Metal:
Metal (Normal heavy metal/thrash metal) is a sub genre of Rock music, normally associated with long hair, satanism (not usually true), overdriven and distorted guitars, fast tempos, fast and powerful drum riffs and strong (Clean, rarely distorted vocals).
Metal is a genre of music which saw it's peak around the 80's and early 90's, and is now a genre which is dismissed by mainstream society, and it's followers are shunned.
People are constantly making prejudice accusations about metal which are not true, or grouping old skool metal with newer genres such as Metalcore, some acusations are that Metal vocals are only screaming, which is not true, although extreme subgenres, such as Black Metal and Death Metal do use distorted vocals, known as growing, or gutteral screams, and aren't as easy as they are made out to be.
Metal is also talked about as "Pointless noise" because guitars can be so far distorted and overdriven. Metal music is actually quite complex, and fast riffs, which to people who don't have good sound processing or aren't paying attention can't understand, and will probably hear as lots of loud noise, that or they have experienced metal mostly with extreme volumes, making it too loud for the human ears to hear properly, or as the fuzz emitted from headphones from a long distance.
In this page, I shall cover Metal Genres such as Thrash Metal, Power Metal, Groove Metal, Death Metal, Black Metal, Doom Metal, Symphonic Metal (Black and Doom Symphonic aswel), NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) (Still called New even though it began in the 70's), Speed Metal, and possibly Technical Death Metal (Very very complex Metal).. These are all (Minus Doom Metal in some ways) classical metal genres, which began in the 70's, 80's or 90's. These are not genres that have begun within the last few years, such as Metalcore/Hardcore/Screamo/Nu Metal, I dislike those genres for a few reasons... 1: They are too Try-Hard for my liking. 2: They don't posses all of the true things that makes them true Metal, such as musical beauty. 3: They've brought a bad name to Metal over recent years.
--Genre's explored and explained-- ---Thrash Metal---
Thrash Metal is possibly the greatest/most popular genre of true metal. This Genre began in the 80's, and is most well known for bands such as Metallica (80's albums), Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax (The 4 "Gods" of Thrash Metal), these bands have been very succesful in their musical career, and have released many albums from the 80's onwards, although sadly, they haven't managed to keep their true thrash metal roots (apart from Slayer and possibly Anthrax), as Metallica, began to 'Sell out' (Selling out is to the metal community, when a band changes it's style to be more radio friendly, or soft, losing their heavy metal roots), at around the Black Album, and with albums such as Load, Reload and St. Anger, have disappointed the metal community greatly. Megadeth, have become a little more radio friendly/commercial rock over the years, mostly due to one of their producers pushing them towards this, although they have made a slight comeback. Megadeth have also had ALOT of lineup changes, the only original member is their frontman, Dave Mustaine.
Your typical thrash metal (mid 80's kinda Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth) has a fast tempo, strong, heavy drums, strong bassline, very overdriven guitars with moderate distortion, with a complex lead/basic rythym, and a clean vocalist, sometimes, noteable in the case of Slayer, will have a more strained, kind of yelling sound to it, although it will still be clean (Not screaming for all you people that wrongly think so)
Thrash Metal is probably my favourite genre of metal, although I do still like extreme subgenres (Black, Death, Doom ect.)
Some thrash metal examples:
---Black Metal---
Black metal is an extreme subgenre of metal, with high pitched growls, and shrieks. Black metal began as blackened thrash, with bands such as Venom, who in an effort to break away from commercialism, began to use raspy vocals, unpolished production and satanic lyrics, aswel as psuedonyms which became very popular in black metal. Another pioneering band was Swedish band bathory, who also used satanic lyrics, and were the first to use shrieking vocals, up through the 80's Bathory kept their black metal style, but towards the 90's where the pionered what became Viking metal.
Black metal is usually considered an underground metal genre, because of society's disrespect towards them, for actions such as anti-christian beliefs and church burnings.
---Groove Metal--- Groove metal is a genre of metal similar to thrash metal, and many groove metal bands took inspiration from such bands as Metalica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer. It is made up of mid tempo thrash riffs, focusing on heaviness and kind of boppy riffs, while still being metal. Guitar solos are usually mid paced and rythym guitar uses syncopated power chords.
Vocals range from harsh shouts, to barks to clean melodic vocals, depending on the style of song. Drums usually consist of strong double bass usage, but not in blasts as heard in black metal, but more melodic waves. Bass lines usually follow the guitar, but will sometimes have their own independent melody, bass distortion is common.
Some Groove metal bands also claim influence from punk rock acts such as the dead kennedys.
--Power Metal--
Power metal is genre of metal, mostly defined for it's lyrical contents, basically think mystical, and you've got it, lyrics can commonly sound like some sort of quest or folk law. Power metal focuses alot on Vocals, with them being quite clean, and strong, usually very operatic and high pitched tone.
Keyboards/symphonic tracks are also used sometimes, and some bands such as nightwish use full orchestral tracks in some songs, although usually done using a keyboard.
--Awesome Lyrics---
Below I shall put some kick-ass lyrics. listen to the video thingies as the songs are quite awesome.
Metallica - Blackened (Thrash Metal)
"Smouldering decay
Take your breath away
Millions of our years in minutes disappears"
Megadeth - Holy Wars... The Punishment Due (Thrash Metal)
"Brother will kill brother
Spilling blood across the land
Killing for religion
Something I don't understand
Fools like me, who cross the sea
And come to foreign lands
Ask the sheep, for their beliefs
Do you kill on God's command?
A country that's divided
Surely will not stand
My past erased, no more disgrace
No foolish naive stand
The end is near, it's crystal clear
Part of the master plan
Don't look now to Israel
It might be your homeland"
Megadeth - Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? (Thrash Metal)
"What do you mean I don't believe in God?
I talk to him every day.
What do you mean I don't support your system?
I go to court when I have to.
What do you mean I can't get to work on time?
I got nothing better to do. And what do you mean I don't pay my bills? Why do you think I'm broke... Huh?"
Pantera - Walk (Groove Metal)
"Run your mouth when I'm not around, it's easy to achieve.
You cry to weak friends that sympathize.
Can you hear the violins playing your song?
Those same friends tell me your every word"
